Every year, like clockwork, my fall calendar fills with one treatment faster than any other: CO2 laser resurfacing.
And there’s a reason for that. CO2 laser resurfacing is hands-down one of the most dramatic, transformative treatments I offer at DripNeedle Med Spa—the kind of treatment that can visibly turn back the clock on years of sun damage, texture, and fine lines. But it comes with one non-negotiable rule: it has to be done in the cooler months. Let me give you the real-talk breakdown—the services, the downtime day by day, and why, if you’re going to do it, fall is your window. Then I’ll tell you about PDO threads, the other big fall lift-and-rebuild treatment worth knowing about.
CO2 laser resurfacing is an ablative treatment—meaning it removes the outer layers of damaged skin to trigger a powerful healing and collagen-building response. That’s where the magic comes from. However, it also means the fresh, new skin underneath is especially vulnerable to the sun while it heals.
Sun exposure during that healing window can cause pigmentation problems—the exact opposite of what we’re going for. As a result, the safe season in Delaware runs roughly September through April. Book in October, heal through the cozy indoor months, and walk into spring with glowing, rebuilt skin. If you read my post-summer recovery guide, this is the treatment I told you to save for true fall. It’s the perfect plan.
Not everyone needs—or wants—a full-face resurfacing right out of the gate. For that reason, I offer three levels of CO2 laser services, so we can match the treatment to your goals, your skin, and your downtime tolerance.
A targeted treatment for the delicate under-eye area. If you’ve got crepey, crinkly, tired-looking skin under your eyes that no cream seems to touch, this tightens and smooths it beautifully. In other words, it’s a wonderful entry point with a focused area of healing.
Lighter resurfacing for the face, neck, and under-eyes—perfect for first-timers. The “sprinkle” approach treats the skin more gently than a full-strength pass, giving you real improvement in tone, texture, and glow with a more manageable recovery. Because of that gentler recovery, this is where a lot of my clients start.
The comprehensive treatment for dramatic results. This addresses deep wrinkles, significant sun damage, texture, and laxity across the full face and neck. It means more downtime, but also the kind of transformation that can last for years. This is the big one.
Still deciding between resurfacing and something gentler? My CO2 laser vs. microneedling comparison walks through exactly how the two stack up.
I’m always honest about downtime, because knowing what’s coming makes it so much easier. Here’s the typical journey for a fuller treatment—keep in mind that healing varies from person to person, and lighter treatments recover faster:
| Timeframe | What’s Happening | How You Look |
|---|---|---|
| During | Heat and some discomfort (numbing helps a lot) | — |
| Days 1–3 | Red, warm, swollen—like a strong sunburn | Stay home & cozy |
| Days 3–7 | Peeling and crusting as old skin sheds | Social downtime |
| Days 7–14 | Pink, fresh, sensitive new skin emerges | Back out, with SPF |
| Months 2–6 | Collagen keeps rebuilding underneath | Glow keeps improving |
The golden rule during recovery: do not pick at peeling skin, keep it moisturized, and protect it religiously with SPF once you’re cleared. I’ll walk you through every step.
CO2 laser resurfacing rebuilds your skin’s surface. But what if your concern is more about sagging and laxity—skin that’s lost its lift? That’s where PDO threads come in, and fall is a great time for them, too.
PDO (polydioxanone) threads are fine, dissolvable sutures—made from a material that’s been used in surgery for years—that I place under the skin. In short, they do two things at once: they provide an immediate, subtle lift by gently repositioning tissue, AND they stimulate collagen along the thread as they dissolve over the following months. Lift now, rebuild over time.
| Your Concern | Better Fit |
|---|---|
| Sun damage, texture, fine lines, tone | CO2 Laser |
| Sagging, jowls, loss of lift | PDO Threads |
| Crepey under-eye skin | CO2 Undereye |
| A bit of both | Often combined—ask at your consult |
In fact, many clients benefit from both at different times: threads to lift the structure, CO2 to perfect the surface. And if overall volume loss is part of the picture, a collagen stimulator like Sculptra can be layered into the plan, too. We’ll figure out the right sequence for you.
Above all, fall is short, and these appointments book up the second the weather turns—because everyone wants to be healed and glowing by spring. If CO2 laser resurfacing or PDO threads have been on your mind, now is the moment to claim your spot.
At your complimentary consultation in Wilmington or Dover, I’ll assess your skin, talk through your goals and your downtime, and build the right plan—whether that’s resurfacing, lifting, or a thoughtful combination of both.
If you’re new to it, the CO2 Sprinkle is a wonderful introduction—real results with a more manageable recovery. Then we’ll confirm the right level at your consult.
CO2 results can last several years, since you’re truly resurfacing and rebuilding collagen. Meanwhile, good skincare and daily SPF help protect your investment. Individual results vary.
We numb the area thoroughly first. As a result, most clients feel pressure and tugging rather than pain, with some soreness afterward.
CO2 carries a higher risk of pigment changes in deeper skin tones, so it isn’t right for everyone. That’s exactly what we assess at your consult—and there are gentler alternatives if it’s not your match.
Often yes, but timing matters. Generally, we sequence them rather than doing both the same day. I’ll map it out for you.
I don’t recommend it, because fresh, resurfaced skin and strong sun are a risky combination, which is why I save this one for the cooler months. My summer skincare guide covers what you can safely do in warmer weather.
